Coastal Living: How to Style a Breezy, Light-Filled Home

Coastal doesn’t mean seashells and anchor motifs. Discover the refined approach to bringing sea-air calm into your interiors with texture, palette, and light.

The best coastal interiors have never seen a single anchor motif or rope-wrapped lampshade. True coastal style is about the quality of light, the rhythm of nature, and a palette lifted from the shoreline — salt-washed greens, faded denim, bone-pale sand, and the deep teal of open water.

The palette: borrow from the shore

Build your palette in three layers: the shore (warm sand, bleached driftwood, aged linen), the sea (sage, seafoam, washed teal), and the sky (cloud white, pale grey, soft blue). You don’t need all three layers in every room — even two is enough to read as coastal without tipping into theme-park territory.

Keep your largest surfaces (walls, sofas, rugs) in shore tones. Bring in sea and sky colours through textiles and smaller accessories.

Texture over pattern

In a coastal room, texture does more work than pattern. Think of the surface of sea glass, weathered teak, or basket weave. Our Oasis cushion, with its cool, barely-there palette and fine weave, is exactly this kind of piece — quiet on pattern but rich in physical texture.

For a breezy, relaxed feel, layer in our Deck cushion. Designed for both indoor and outdoor use, its UV-stable performance fabric has a matte, almost canvas-like quality that immediately evokes the sun-bleached finishes of a coastal home.

Let the light lead

Natural light is your most important styling tool in a coastal home. Keep window treatments sheer or absent altogether. If privacy is a concern, choose woven wood blinds that filter rather than block — they cast a beautiful dappled light and add a raw-material texture to the room.

Bring in organic shapes

Coastal rooms feel most authentic when they include at least one piece with an organic, imperfect shape — a round rattan tray, an irregular-edged ceramic, a basket with a slightly wonky weave. Pair these with the geometry of cushion arrangements for a perfect tension between the natural and the considered.
